The charming seven-mile Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway reveals the beauties of Eskdale. Every Wednesday between May and October you can join a special guided "Steam and Romans" trip, taking you to all the key Roman sites in the area; including Hardknott Roman Fort (also accessible through the Mountain Goat trips in summer, or by car).
Serene and atmospheric St Bees Priory is also easily accessible from Ravenglass, with 800-year-old Muncaster Castle another great day out. This castle has plenty of stories to tell (some of them ghost related!). There are also plenty of special events to bring this magical site to life.
Further up the Cumbrian coast lies Georgian Whitehaven, with its fascinating Rum Story museum, tracing the origins of the UK rum trade. You'll also find the newly refurbished Beacon and plenty of tea shops, cafes and shops for those looking for refreshment and shopping therapy!
