Cycling West of Carlisle to Ravenglass

West of Carlisle to Ravenglass (Including Bowness on Solway)

Buzzing around St Bees

A ride of varied scenery, from the spectacular sandstone cliffs of St Bees to the quiet lanes and cycle paths on historic railway lines inland. On traffic-free path (or greenway) and quiet roads. Some very narrow lanes.

Ennerdale Loop

This ride leads you along the famous Sea to Sea (C2C) Cycle Route on a shared use traffic free path (or greenway) through peaceful West Cumbrian countryside as you head closer to the high fells of the Lake District. The first 4 miles are on greenway, rest on quiet roads, although the road leaving Ennerdale Bridge can be quite busy with people travelling to work. You then follow quiet roads to the lovely Lake District valley of Ennerdale, before returning through Ennerdale Bridge. If you want a totally traffic-free day you can do the first part of this route as an ‘out and back’ route.

Port to Port

Even if you think you know this area this ride will surprise you, combining dramatic coastline scenery with attractive countryside reaching out to the Lake District fells. Mostly on shared-use, traffic-free paths (or greenways) with short sections on quiet roads, but is all part of the wellsigned Hadrian’s Cycleway, so you should hardly need to look at the description below. You could make the return journey by train on the Cumbrian Coast Line.

Roman Solway

A ride almost at sea level around Bowness Common via Bowness-on-Solway village (built on the site of the Roman Fort which formed the western end of Hadrian’s Wall). Follows Hadrian’s Cycleway for much of the time on quiet roads with expansive views across the Solway Firth to Scotland. Lots of interesting bird life.

Silloth and Abbeytown

A ride through the gentle countryside around the seaside town of Silloth via a new farm attraction and the remains of the 12th century Cistercian Abbey of Holm Cultram. Over half on Hadrian’s Cycleway with Solway Firth and Lakeland fells vistas between and above the hedgerows.
